Won't my home insurance cover my computer?
If you decide not to buy insurance for your computer and are instead relying on your home insurance to provide cover, it is worth noting not all home insurance policies will provide adequate levels of cover, therefore, always carefully read your policy or check with your home insurance company.
For example if you did need to make a claim for your stolen or damaged computer or laptop you may be penalised in a number of ways
1. Some home contents insurance companies' single article upper limits are not very high and would not cover the cost of a new computer. Unfortunately computers depreciate quickly; a computer that costs £2,000 now might not be worth more than £500 after only a year. Your home insurance policy may only pay to the present value of the computer.
2. Some home contents insurance policies will not provide cover if you use the computer away from your home or the office. If you use a laptop and travel to business meetings you are taking a big risk.
Currently, 70,000 computers are stolen each year in the UK, and more than 100,000 are accidentally damaged. Due to their small size and the manner in which they are used, laptops are high risk and an easy target for the opportunist thief who will operate in most environments including business premises, public sector buildings, cars, Hotels and households.
